Highway 1 California Coast

Category: Nature

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), or California State Route 1, is a beautiful and scenic 700-mile long stretch of highway from north to south that extends along most of California’s Pacific coastline. Several stretches of the highway have been confirmed a scenic highway, including the Big Sur portion that extends from San Luis Obispo to Carmel.

Famous for meandering through beautiful coastline scenery, it runs north from Mendocino County down to Orange County through Los Angeles, San Francisco and other coastal areas. The first section of the PCH opened in the 1930’s, and it was not until 1964 that it officially was named Highway 1.

Though known for its beauty, due to frequent landslides and erosion, portions of Highway 1 undergo frequency repairs or have been rerouted further inland
